May 2006

Simon is currently wrapping up some last minute things before heading to Nashville. Watch this space for US dates soon!

October 2005
Hi guys, I’m presently chilling out in Melbourne and doing some gigs around town before I head off to the US in early 2006. Checkout the gigs page for forthcoming dates. Whilst my debut album RESTLESS THOUGHTS is getting some great reviews, I’ve been writing some new songs which I’m really excited about. I’ve road-tested a few at gigs and the response has been great, I’ll be keeping these aside for the next album. Stay tuned….Simon.

September 2005
Mixing music with movies at the Bryan Brown Film Festival at Revesby in late August, Simon wowed the crowd at the Bryan Brown Film Festival, including Bryan Brown himself who couldn't wait to grab a copy of Restless Thoughts - and Jack Thompson wasn't about to be left out, getting Simon to sign a CD for him at the main table after Simon's performance! Then the next week it was Jimmy Barnes congratulating Simon on his performance at The Basement, and also looking for a copy of the album.

And it continues in September with Simon opening for Richard Clapton and Joe Camilleri - check the gigs page. And if you haven't got hold of a copy of the single The Holy Grail yet, head down to your local JB Hi Fi and check it out!

August 2005
With his debut album Restless Thoughts getting consistently favourable reviews, Simon is happy to see the single off the album being released later this month, including a favourite, and previously unreleased track, "Ingénue". With gigs including a special request to appear at the Bryan Brown Film Festival (sorry folks, invitation only) on 26 August, a full band gig at the Heritage Hotel at Bulli on 25 August (everyone welcome!), and numerous solo performances in and around Sydney, Simon is getting a great response from new audiences and long time fans. Don't forget to put a message in his Guestbook and sign up for email alerts on Simon's upcoming gigs. Stay tuned for more News on gigs and tours in September!

July 2005
We’ve just shot the music video clip for the 2nd single The Holy Grail down in Melbourne. Long days and the weather was extremely cold, but well worth it as the clip looks great. The single is slated for release in August so stay tuned to your radio stations and we’ll soon have the clip up on the website as well. Some more live dates have been added and more are coming through, so check out out the gig page.

August 2004

The long awaited debut album is finished. Produced and Mixed by Nash Chambers the album will be mastered by the legendary Bob Ludwig for an early 2005 release.

July 2004

After three months of songwriting for his next album, as well as his third tour of Texas in April and some gigging around Nashville in May and June, Simon is currently in the middle of a very successful tour opening for Tommy Emmanuel down the west coast of USA, with other places to follow. Audience reaction so far includes:
"I was very impressed, I loved your lyrics.
" "Simon you are one incredible guy."
"...really enjoyed your songs. They grab right from the beginning, look forward to more music".

March 2004

February has been a big month, with a management deal with Karen-Lee Goody at Encompass, and Simon has finished recording his first album with Essence. With a release date set for later this year, Simon now returns to the US for some touring dates and more songwriting.

January 2004

Simon spent most of 2003 in the USA where he toured Texas, opened for John Hiatt in the north east and Georgia, showcased at The Bitter End in New York City, and took every opportunity to write songs and perform in his home town base, Nashville. In November touring agency Buddy Lee Attractions signed Simon to their roster, giving Simon even more performance opportunities in the US in 2004. Back here in Australia over summer, Simon has just signed a recording contract with Essence, Nash Chambers' record label. Expect a CD release soon! Before Simon returns to the US you can catch him at the Unity Hall Hotel, Darling Street, Balmain this Wednesday, 14th January at 9 p.m.

Looking forward to seeing you there!

November 2003

Major American touring agency Buddy Lee Attractions has signed Simon as one of their artists. Simon, pictured here with Buddy Lee executives David Kiswiney (left) and Tony Conway (right), is looking forward to more performance opportunities in 2004. "From January next year I'll be working wherever I can. The people at Buddy Lee have been very supportive, they want to book me with the band or doing solo work, and I'm looking forward to playing across America next year".

Simon has enjoyed spending most of this year in the US. "Nashville is a music city, there are so many opportunities for writing music, performing with excellent musicians and meeting top producers and others involved in the music industry. I'm looking forward to being back there in the new year".

When Tommy Emmanuel played at the Station Inn in Nashville in October he invited Simon on stage to play a couple of numbers. As usual Tommy's wonderful fingerpicking added another dimension to "Rainbow Hotel" (Tommy's favourite Simon Bruce number) and to the newer "Ingenue". The audience, as always, already delighted with Tommy's exceptional playing loved Simon's words and music and went home talking about yet another Australian talent entertaining America!

August 2003

Don't miss Simon on 1 September at Nashville haunt Coco's (behind the Exit/In) when he debuts with his band for a full night of Simon Bruce originals! Simon has been rehearsing with drums, bass and lead guitar for the last couple of months and fans won't be disappointed with the rocked up sound of some old favourites like "Restless Thoughts", and newer songs like "Place Where You Live", and "Too Late Now" (the latter co-written with Daniel Tashian).

Simon has also spent the last few weeks finishing some terrific new songs, including doing some studio production on numbers like "What Scares You Tonight?" with Angelo, and putting down a range of tracks with Mark Miller (who worked extensively with Garth Brooks), and sounding out ideas with another talented Aussie ex-pat Mark Moffatt.

July 2003

Simon's debut performance at the renowned Bitter End in New York was a shining success, with the audience enraptured by his songs and his performance. The venue was packed with people eager to see another New York Songrwiting Circle night showcasing ASCAP talent. Simon shared the round with Jonathan Rice, Jonathan Spottiswoode and Amy Carreira, and the crowd didn't hesitate when offered the chance of an extra song from the performers.

Simon' set included "Place Where You Live", "Peaceful", "Never Say Goodbye" and "Ingénue", with high demand for the latter in particular to be included on his next CD.

The next night saw Simon entertain another crowded venue, this time the Living Room in East Village. Playing at 10 p.m. the audience included people who had seen Simon in Texas, and New Yorkers with friends in Nashville who had recommended they catch Simon. Simon finished his set with the "Final Straw", and at least one label executive foresaw the song as a major radio hit. Mixing with music industry people after the show Simon discussed, and gained new insights into some of his favourite performers such as Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen. Overall the two nights were a great start exposure of Simon to the New York crowd and Simon can't wait to go back again.

June 2003

After hearing Simon strum a couple of songs at an Australia party the night before, popular Texan artist Hayes Carll invited Simon to open for him at The Sutler, Nashville in late June. The night was very much an Australian affair - Hayes was backed by talented Aussie pair, Kim Warner and Carol Young (otherwise known for their own Texan trio, the Green Cards), and was also joined on stage with the recently signed Jed Hughes who added some sparkling lead guitar to Carll's original music. Spotted amongst the audience was Catherine Britt and visiting drummer Mick, who was heading home for a tour with Phil Emmanuel.

Simon opened for John Hiatt in Connecticut, New York state and New Hampshire at the end of May. "Having the opportunity to play in some beautiful theatres in front of new audiences who appreciated my music, and then to listen to John Hiatt perform acoustically and entertain with his stories from the road, was just fantastic" said Simon. "Having that chance is one of the reasons why I'm here in America." Simon is in New York at the end of June for two performances and returns to Nashville for an appearance at the Bluebird Cafe at an ASCAP/Combustion writers night on 9 July.

May 2003

On Tuesday 13 May the Slow Bar, a favourite Nashville haunt for up and coming acts, rocked to the sound of Simon's music. Playing a five song set, Simon was accompanied by fellow Australian and ace guitarist Rod McCormack, and the crowd loved what they heard. After tapping along to up tempo numbers like "Rise and Shine" and "Place Where You Live", the crowd hushed for the beautiful ballad "Peaceful", when Simon and Rod were joined on stage for harmonies by another Aussie, Kim Cheshire. Finishing with "Never Say Goodbye", the audience response ensured that Simon will be back at the Slow Bar in the summer.

Based in Nashville, it's easy to catch the best acts America has to offer. In April Simon enjoyed Bob Dylan's performance at the intimate Nashville venue, The Trap. From "Blind Willie McTell" to "Honest with Me" (all played by Dylan on keyboard) the master lyricist blew Simon away and filled him with inspiration as he pursues his music career.

With upcoming performances at numerous local venues, Simon is breaking in new songs and entertaining audiences with old classics. "It's one thing to write the songs, it's another to perform them", says Simon. "Nashville offers plenty of opportunities to play, from 12th and Porter to the Slow Bar."

"Combustion's Engine Drive More than Typical Nashville Fare" - Billboard February 8, 2003

Combustion Music, which also includes a production company and soundtrack label, is the atypical partnership of Chris Farren, a songwriter/producer who brought 20 years of experience living and working in Los Angeles to Nashville - and Ken Levitan, a Nashville music-business veteran who manages the like of Lyle Lovett and John Hiatt.

"...the main thing we've tried to do at Combustion is not be boxed in any matter or limited to any one format", Levitan notes. Levitan also singles out new signings Simon Bruce - "an unbelievable rock alternative songwriter from Australia" - Canadian writer/artist/producer Gordie Sampson, and singer/songwriter Andy Gullahorn, who has penned songs for hit artist wife, Jill Phillips.

March 2003

Simon has just been granted his O-1 visa which entitles him to live and work in the United States for the next three years. Granted on the basis of exceptional and outstanding talent, the visa will give even more impetus to Simon's pursuit of his music career in America.

Simon returns to Nashville next week where he will be recording some of the his current songs and preparing for more American tours later in the year.

January 2003

After a well-earned Christmas break, Simon is preparing for his next tour of Texas. Check the gigs page for dates and places.

Texas: Simon's music has been enthusiastically received in Texas. First stop was a singer songwriter night at the historic township of Gruene, just outside New Braunfels. Performing with Nathan Hamilton and Slaid Cleaves, two popular Texans, the trio received a standing ovation from the audience attending the picturesque Riverside Restaurant. Playing live earlier in the day at a radio interview at New Braunfels radio station KNBT Simon impressed with his newer song, Steppin' Stones and the evergreen favourite, Rainbow Hotel.

Simon's self-released CD The Champagne Sessions is receving widespread airplay in Texas, including at KSYM in San Antonio and the university campus station KUT in Austin. Interest has been keen after Simon's other performances at the famous Cactus Cafe (host of performers such as Bob Dylan and Townes van Zandt), Threadgills' Restaurant (where Janis Joplin first played) and popular venue Poor David's Club in Dallas.

New York: With only a couple of days to spare Simon made the most of his first trip to New York, visiting sites associated with music icons such as Bob Dylan, John Lennon and Billy Joel. First stop was Cafe Wha in Greenwich village where Dylan first played. Then up to 52nd Street, title of the famed Billy Joel album, before a more subdued visit to Strawberry fields in Central Park, tribute to John Lennon.

England: Simon took a couple of weeks break before heading to Texas for a few gigs and some songwriting. He caught up with Tommy Emmanuel who was opening for the Rhythm Kings on their current UK tour, as well as visiting the Roman baths in Bath, and the Tarr Steps in Somerset Castle.

March 2002
SIMON AT SxSW:

Simon is making a big splash at South by South West in Austin, Texas. Playing to the homeless at the Caritas soup kitchen on Wednesday (or South by Soup Fest, as the charity event is called), Simon told the local media - "I'll play to anyone who wants to hear my music". Simon's performance and interview played on the local news and cable television station that night. The next day the Austin Chronicle highlighted his showcase (scheduled for later today) as one not to miss.

Simon was invited to perform at SXSW in the first round of invitations, and preceded his visit with a trip to Nashville where he performed every night at songwriter rounds and artist spotlights, as well as co-writing with some of the Nashville big time songwriters.

February 2002
Simon was warmly welcomed by Kim Richey when he ran into her at the APRA cocktail party in Tamworth during the 2002 Country Music Festival. Richey, in Australia for the International Songwriter series which Simon attended the following day at the West Tamworth Leagues Club, told Simon she was looking forward to working on her soon-to-be-released CD when she returns to Nashville.
Simon and Kim in Nashville

Grizzly Adams welcomed Simon to his Tamworth Festival Radio program and played one of Simon's new demo cuts, "Crazy Like the Wind" during an interview on Friday evening. Simon continued his meet and greet tour around Tamworth catching up with Lindsay Hammond who he appeared with in 2000 on the Denise Drysdale Show in Melbourne; Starmaker 2001 Kylie Sackley's manager, Greg Shaw; and many Sydney musicians such as regular Sydney performer and songwriter night host Keith Armitage.

As usual, Tamworth proved a great spot for meeting with music people, especially fellow singer songwriters.

Simon's next tour out of Australia will see him in Nashville and at the South by South West showcase in Austin, Texas, in March.

January 2002
The big news for 2002 is Simon's invitation to play at the South by South West (SXSW) showcase at Austin, Texas, in March. Simon will use the opportunity for a return trip to Nashville as well.

On either side of the USA trip Simon will be performing at the Cobargo Folk Festival (22-24 February) and the National Folk Festival in Canberra on the Easter weekend.

For gigs information generally keep watching the Gigs page, or register to be on Simon's email list for information about forthcoming events.

Simon is now three quarters of the way through his September 2001 tour of Nashville and has found an even greater response this year to his brilliant songwriting and honed performances. Favourite songs are hard to pick, with the audiences responding equally to all of Simon's wide repertoire from the thought-provoking "Rainbow Hotel" to the haunting "Where Roses Fade". His CD "The Champagne Sessions" is receiving a similar positive response, Simon will be returning to Australia with his American fan base firmly established.

Simon is one of 24 artists selected from hundreds of applicants from across Australia to perform at the Australian Music Week showcase. The Australian Music Week theme is Bridging Australia, with the aim of taking Australian music to the world. Simon is doing just that during September as he shares his original material and unique performance with the Nashville music scene. Don't miss Simon during Australian Music Week when he plays at the Henry IX bar at the Hilton Hotel on Friday 12 October at 9 p.m.

Simon had a big August, from opening for Grace Knight at The Basement to confirming his status as a very popular performer at singer songwriter nights at The Ivanhoe in Manly. He’s also been selected to play at an important event in October - watch this space for more details!

Right now Simon is provoking overwhelming positive response to his unique sound in downtown Nashville. Lee "You Look Bad" Rascone from the Broken Spoke Café heard Simon sing one song and immediately booked him in for the next two nights where he brought the Saturday night house down with "Rainbow Hotel", and had the crowd in the palm of his hand for "Turn Myself to Driftin’".

July 2001
Simon is one of handful of singer-songwriters chosen to perform at the fourth annual National Folk Convention being held in Adelaide from 24th to 26th August this year. Simon will showcase a number of his songs, some of which - such as "Rainbow Hotel" and "Rise and Shine" - are receiving airplay on ABC regional radio and Sydney radio 2BL. These tracks are taken from his CD "The Champagne Sessions".

Simon will also be playing some new compositions that he has been working on over recent months, at the same time as he has been playing gigs in and around the Sydney metropolis. Audience response has been overwhelming, with steady sales of "The Champagne Sessions", and an increasing number of fans signing up to the e-mail notification of Simon's upcoming performances.

June 2001
ABC radio has selected "Rainbow Hotel" from Simon's Tommy Emmanuel-produced CD, "The Champagne Sessions", for inclusion on a compilation CD forwarded to regional ABC radio stations. Response was swift, with ABC Radio Darwin rushing to interview 16 year old Simon for some insight into how he came to write and perform such a hit.

"Santa gave me my first guitar when I was 5", Simon told the Darwin listeners, before describing how he started with "easy" chords before moving on to composing his own lyrics and music.

Presenter ANNIE GASTEN told Simon she thought the song Rainbow Hotel was a "beautiful composition", and finished the interview by playing the track that Darwinites have taken to their heart.

May 2001
To see Simon play one of his own compositions live visit the Replay Room at www.thebasement.com.au

On Friday 18th May Simon brought the house down at the Bob Dylan Desire night at The Basement, Sydney. Opening the evening with a three song set starting with Hurricane, Simon wowed the fans who called for "Young Bob" when he returned on stage later in the night to play a haunting duet of Blowin' in the Wind with Tanya Bowra, then again blowing some harp with Cameron Bruce and the band in Rolling Stone.

Simon has just completed a busy few weeks, starting in March/April with a rapturous reception at Crown Casino, Melbourne and The Basement, Sydney where he opened for Tommy Emmanuel on Tommy's latest Australian tour.

Then Sydney audiences enjoyed more of Simon's songs when he headlined at the Saturday night Rozelle venue, Almost Acoustic in mid-April, and then at the end of the month performed at the very popular Surry Hills Crown Street Festival. April also saw him performing live on The Basement Internet radio (www.thebasement.com.au) and making a half hour guest appearance for radio 2SER.

While currently focussing on his songwriting, more performances are scheduled so keep in touch at this website or email lowbru@bigpond.com for more information on upcoming gigs and CD purchases.

Feb 2001
Simon Bruce, the 15 year old Australian singer-songwriter with appreciative audiences in Sydney and Melbourne and national exposure through radio station Triple J, ABC’s Recovery and Channel V’s The Joint, is planning some Australian gigs before heading overseas in 2001.

Simon spent two months in Nashville in June and July 2000, opening for Tommy Emmanuel and Marie Wilson, playing to the local record producers, and performing at well-known Nashville institutions like the Bluebird Cafe and 12th and Porter.

As well Tommy Emmanuel produced a CD with a mixture of Simon’s new and older material, with Keith Urban lending a hand on backing vocals and Tommy providing lead guitar and drums. The resulting six track has a great sound and was snapped up by audiences back in Australia in September when Simon opened for Tommy in Sydney and Canberra.

The CD, titled "The Champagne Sessions", was also popular when Simon was special guest at the KoolSkool Awards in Festival Hall, Melbourne, and The Metro in Sydney in December 2000. In January 2001 Simon spent some time at the Tamworth Country Music Festival, with Grizzly Adams arranging a guest appearance at the Legends venue at the Tamworth Wests Leagues Club and an interview on Festival FM, with airplay of two tracks from The Champagne Sessions.

In late January Simon had a two hour radio spot with folk music fan Red on radio station 3DMR. Simon played some new material live, played tracks from The Champagne Sessions and from one of his earlier releases, "Meet Me in the Cold". As well Simon played some of his favourite artists including Bob Dylan and John Lennon.

With a fan base extending across Australia and through America and Europe, 2001 is shaping up to be a big year for Simon.

Watch this space for details of upcoming gigs!

Simon, a talented young Aussie singer songwriter, sang his own compositions "Thursday" and "Meet Me in the Cold". "Thursday" appears on his current CD, "The Champagne Sessions", produced by Tommy Emmanuel and recorded at the Champagne Studios in Nashville, while "Meet Me in the Cold" will be on his next CD.

The Basement Radio can be found here.

Simon was in Sydney on his way to Canberra to open for Tommy Emmanuel and meet up with family and friends, including Becky and Rachel Lane. Reviews of Tommy's concerts, including Simon's performances on guitar and harmonica, have been very positive, and the audiences are looking forward to more live performances when Tommy and Simon tour again next year.

Tommy Emmanuel & Friends - York Theatre, Seymour Centre, 24 August 2000

Opening the evening’s entertainment was 15 year old Melbourne-based singer song-writer Simon Bruce, whom Tommy had met in Nashville, who proved a remarkable young find. Performing songs that were very much a mix of Bob Dylan meets Paul Simon, many of which he seems to have written when he was 12 and 13, this young guy is just remarkable, and he’s only just beginning his career...

Simon Bruce at the Bluebird Cafe, Nashville - 10 July 2000

After playing the usual waiting game; going to the Bluebird Cafe open mike night on 3 July, not getting a place, promised a place this week and appearing 19th out of 20 singer/songwriters scheduled, Simon got up and played "Thursday" and "What You See Is What You Get" to a starry-eyed crowd hushed in silence. Thunderous applause and yells from the crowd followed, he was acknowledged again by the act that followed and there was more applause, and Barbara, the hostess of the night asked if Simon "would be around for a while." As he left the venue he was stopped and back-patted by his fellow writers until he was outside and then even more writers gave him the big thumbs up.

He'll be back there for sure!
